With the surge of construction in the United States following the end of World War II, major corporations, and entrepreneurs alike, began to introduce into the construction industry an array of novel and unproven building products fabricated from various sources, each using vastly different methods. With the intent to standardize the quality of construction materials, in 1948 The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) published a document – a numbering system – that was intended to improve and standardize the formatting of construction specifications. Beginning with a 16-division format, this list has grown to include over 48 separate divisions to represent an ever-evolving list of products, manufacturers, processes, materials, and installation methods intended for use in commercial, institutional, and residential building projects.
Starting with Division 00 – Procurement and Contracting Requirements through Division 48 – Electrical Power Generation, the CSI document provides material-based guidance to organizing building materials and installation requirements intended to ensure that each specified material or method meet the basic requirements stated within each construction division.
Division 09 is the section of the CSI document that is dedicated to the interior finish selections of a built project and includes material selections that are intended to be applied to the walls, floors, and ceilings of nearly all interior construction projects. The list of materials within this section include ceramic tile, stone flooring, resilient flooring, terrazzo flooring, broadloom and modular carpet, paint, wallcovering, wood flooring, access flooring, fabric, decorative finishes, and assorted ceiling assemblies.
These materials are the final details and elements that very often express the culture, product, brand, and ethos of the organization that occupies the built space.
Ultimately, Source 9 strives to be your trusted source for many of the materials found within Division 9 of the Construction Specifications Institute document.
